TV Manager 2 advantage boosters

I am just wrapping up everything in order to start with the final testing. We are just a step away from release.  Excited? 🙂 [I am!]

When switching the game back to the pure single-player mode I thought a second about dropping the advantage booster idea. However I found it to be an interesting way to give everyone the possibility to modify & customize the gameplay to their needs. For example some have asked for the possibility to have exclusive news channels. While the game is not meant to allow this in normal gameplay (it would need to be much more focused on news in order to make this fun for everyone), it is well possible to make an exclusive news channel if you use advantage booster cards.

Basically you will be able to built a deck of 5 cards from about 20 unique advantage booster cards. If not stated otherwise those cards can be stacked for maximum effect.

These booster cards will be available as some kind of mini-addon.

Here is the card concept (suggestions & comments welcome):

Paparazzi – Your news popularity is increased by 5% and does not wear down during the day.

Technician – This top technician allows you to freely change your TV program during broadcasting.

Wow! This is most interesting. Cannot wait.

Is the 5% bonus relative or absolute?

  3. Jeb Says:

The whole “mob” thing would really discourage me from playing the game. I like TVM 1 because it didn’t have silly stuff like that; it seemed realistic. The “mob” thing doesn’t reflect the true nature of broadcasting. I’m not a big fan of the “boosters” to begin with (again, they take away from the game’s reality and sort of feel like cheats), but at least most of them somehow reflect different aspects of the television industry. But specifically the mob makes the game seem sort of silly; it’s out of place. Please don’t include it; I would rather beat my competition based on good business sense and strategy than sicking the mob on someone.

In hindsight, all the rest sort of feel out of place, too. Why can’t this just be a game where you just have to work hard to succeed? Instead of using a booster to make your news popular, why don’t you just produce a good news show or give the show a strong lead-in? Why do we need a “cheat” like a lead-in card when we could just work hard to put on strong broadcasting to create a really good lead-in ourselves? Why not work hard to make money instead of having a random giveaway (the “rich” booster)? I think these boosters will take the emphasis off the game itself; the game is about television management, not about “How can I get good boosters so that I can make the game easier and/or make up for my poor performance in a certain aspect of the game?” I’m not trying to be harsh, Niels. I love your work. I just really don’t want a good business strategy game like TVM 1 turned in to something easy and silly. Please consider my comments if you haven’t already. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to give you feedback directly :).

    Hi,

sorry for the late reply. I normally intent to answer faster.

    @Timothy: The bonus is absolute.

@Jeb: I am not sure if there is a misunderstanding. Please understand that:

    1. The lead-in, tent-poling etc. bonus is IN ADDITION to the usual lead-in and tent-poling bonus. This means that this just increases the effect that is already in the game (and which has been asked for as a feature).

    2. You can experiment with the game rules, which I think is interesting for people who think they have “seen it all” or want to just try a different way of playing (exclusive news channel e.g.).

    3. Of course your news in the standard game get better if you create a news program specialized to your target audience. However this game is about movies and not news, so in the current version it is not possible for me to include a complexity for the news programming compareable to the other part of the game. That´s why you could optionally use booster cards to play an exclusive news channel as an additional goodie.

    4. It´s a much more interesting feature (in my opinion) than to just include cheats.

    5. You do not need to use boosters in the game (standard setting is OFF).

    6. The boosters are an optional addition to the game. You can buy a game version completely without boosters.

  6. Jeb Says:

Thank you for the explanation, Niels. I am happy to hear we can choose to play without the boosters if we wish. Also, I now understand better what your intent was with including the boosters. They give you a chance to customize the game to your liking and be a little creative. I’m not sure how this would have played out if the game were online (e.g., if I wanted to play the game without boosters but everyone else used them), but considering the game is single player for now I’m not worried about that. Thanks for clearing everything up. I can’t wait for the game!

Well, i like the sound of this system, —- mob included.

This way you can more easily specialize your programming time and audience, and thus, rather than simply being a generalized channel showing a variety, you could make it through as say a Scifi channel, or become famous for showing movies in hd, —- which seems to be very much the way the industry is working currently.

In fact, you might considder game challenges, —- eg, finishing as a news channel, with some sort of award attached to them.

I also like the idea that the boosters are tied specifically to realistic advantages, Eg, having a good lawyer or technition.

As for the mob, —- well, so long as they don’t take over the game to the point where your playing a mafia war, I don’t really see the trouble, they just add an extra element to play with.

I’ll certainly be interested to give this one a try, —- especially sinse as I said, the number of single player strategical accessible games is virtually none.

I’m really looking forward to this game coming out, and I agree, the boosters does at a bit more creativeness, if used right, Personally I prefer to have those than cheats myself, thats when the game really loses its focus, and I believe without the regular cheats like that, the playability goes up more.
